Gear Cutting

Uses and Purposes

In the production and regeneration processes of gearing tools, the main focus is on cutting performance.

With this goal in mind, Lafer has developed a working method to offer a comprehensive service including decoating, certified sharpening, control of tooth form and cutting profile, and dedicated coatings for hob cutters, knives, and stick blades.
Surface preparation of the tool before and after coating significantly enhances the performance of the coating and therefore of the tool itself.

HSS and HM hobs

In the mass production of gears, the goal is to achieve high-quality surface finishes on the finished pieces. This characteristic is attained by minimizing wear on the hob cutters, thereby increasing their durability.

To achieve this objective, Lafer provides a fast and high-quality service for integral hob cutters, both with and without shank holes, managing all production stages internally. The production process concludes with the application of Lafer coatings, which enhance cutting parameters on the tools.

Flat and helical knives

For the regeneration of hobbing cutters, particularly for applications like internal Power Skiving, Lafer has developed a specialized sharpening and coating solution, especially for HM tools. This combination optimizes the edge profile and tool finish.

Production processes in this sector are continuous, with tight machining schedules and high cutting speeds. Consequently, the ultimate needs are: improved cutting precision, reduced machine downtime for maintenance, and increased process quality and productivity.

Stick blades

For cutting operations involving bevel gears, frontal gears, frontal inserts, and power skiving, Lafer offers a comprehensive service of sharpening and coating on stick blades to ensure superior toothed material finishing and precision. The R&D team has also developed dedicated tooling for various stick blade geometries to selectively coat only the functional areas of the tool, preventing coating deposition on the shanks and ensuring tolerance integrity.

Coating, sharpening, and profiling of stick blades enable effective performance even in demanding conditions and dry cutting operations, reducing cycle times and machine downtime for maintenance.

Proposed coatings for every application

Lafer continually refines its base coatings by adapting them to customer needs, thereby creating specialized coatings optimized for specific applications.
